i’m an animal

I AM A CREATURE OF THE WILD.

Is it instinct? Or design?

"ANIMAL" IS MY ODE TO THE WILD SIDE OF HUMAN NATURE. INSPIRED BY THE DARK, MAGNETIC ENERGY OF DEPECHE MODE, THIS TRACK TAPS INTO RAW ATTRACTION, THE CHAOS OF INSTINCT, AND THE UNTAMED PULL WE ALL FEEL BUT CAN’T RESIST. EVERY BEAT AND LYRIC IS MEANT TO DRAW YOU INTO THAT PRIMAL WORLD.

THis is the story of it’s genesis

Some days I catch myself thinking—aren’t we just DNA and chromosomes, wired up, running around like we’re more than machines? Wildest part is, it feels like it’s by design. But then there’s that little voice that knows it’s thinking, and suddenly I’m stuck in this loop of questioning.

From Voice Memo to Darkwave POP

USING CUBASE MY PREFERRED DAW

The song "Animal" literally came to me out of nowhere, just driving in my car. This melody hit me. I started humming the chorus, right there - I heard the G Minor, D Minor, C Major chords. It just clicked. I pulled over and recorded it as a voice memo. 🐾

From Hum to Howl

I came back home, sat down at the piano, and started playing it. And for some reason, the word "Animal" just... came out. My songs usually start with a hum, always. Never lyrics. They usually show up later, once I've got the cadence sorted. But this time, it just felt inherently right to sing that word —

MOOG SUB 37

As I was molding the chorus, the song started pushing itself. It was leaning hard into darkwave/synth-wave territory, with a definite, undeniable flavor of New Order and Depeche Mode in there (I was listening a lot to the both of them due to creating a playlist specifically for my favorite DarkPop & DarkWave songs). That's when I dove into Output's Substance plugin, just thumbing through bass sounds. Found this repeater/ducker bass sound I absolutely loved, started tweaking it. Later, I layered in a Moog Sub 37 to bring the analog depth I envisioned for the sub frequencies to life.

The verse melody came pretty quickly after that, however, it was a fight to nail it down. After a few good ideas, I actually turned to my wife and asked for help. She came into the studio, sat with me as I played the verse instrumental on loop, and together, we finished what I couldn't. This was the first time I've ever co-written a song with anyone, and honestly? Experiencing that first time with her was something special. ♥️

Unleashing the Beast

Now, the meaning of "Animal" isn't what you're probably thinking, at least not to us. Sure, by every visible measure, we are animals. But we know we're more than that. Still, sometimes it just feels right to “unleash the beast”. And believe it or not, that can be a deeply healthy thing. Especially when it comes to your partner and yourself, when you're looking for an adventure, or just need to completely let go. There's a profound satisfaction in letting go with your partner. You should have a fire burning inside for them, a fire that burns like the sun itself. 🔥

This song is exactly about that. So, have fun with it.😉 But it's also a recognition that we do operate on an animalistic level, and it's absolutely in your best interest to find a balance with that. The lyrics are obviously exaggerated – it takes a certain metacognitive ability to truly get that. But here's the thing: no matter how sharp you are with that balance -

The draw of nature is unyielding. There's nothing you can do to stop it. No belief system, no identity, no person steeped in those systems can escape it. The urge is there, sometimes like a moth to the flame. 🦋+🔥
